ABC President Steve McPherson says that the network’s new sitcom Cavemen, based on the Geico commercials, which premieres on October 2, will end on October 9. The decision to set the date for the series finale before the show even started airing was reportedly made because the first few episodes had a complex storyline which the network thought may confuse the viewers.

While McPherson sees the move as yet another “innovative programming strategy,” many believe that what really prompted the decision were critics who felt that the take on racial prejudice was in poor taste and negative reactions of the audience to the previews. Even though ABC has given a definite date, there is still the possibility that the show is headed for an much earlier cancellation.

Six episodes have already been filmed, with Bill English, Nick Kroll, Sam Huntington and Stephanie Lemelin in leading roles.
