Cinema Blend writes that Karl Urban and Chris Pine have been confirmed as the new Leonard “Bones” McCoy and Captain Kirk in the upcoming Star Trek movie. New Zealand actor Karl Urban is best known for playing Eomer in The Lord of Rings trilogy and has also appeared in The Chronicles of Riddick, Doom, Pathfinder and television series Xena: Warrior Princess.
The rumour about Chris Pine playing Kirk was confirmed a few days ago, when director Joe Carnahan said on his blog that the actor cast as Junior Stemmons in his James Ellroy adaptation White Jazz “has opted to boldly go where no man has gone before.” Pine is best known for his role in Carnahan’s 2006 movie Smokin’ Aces and will appear alongside Christian Bale and Javier Bardem in Killing Pablo.
In the meantime, AICN editor Hercules suggested on the AICN talkback board that William Shatner will make an appearance in Star Trek XI after all, saying: “All publicity about Shatner not playing old Kirk in the movie is lie. Word to your mother.” Hollywood.com reports the same. It appears that the old Kirk will be making a cameo.
And here it is. The main cast of the J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek prequel:
Chris Pine, William Shatner (unconfirmed) - Captain Kirk
Zachary Quinto, Leonard Nimoy - Spock
Karl Urban - Leonard McCoy
Simon Pegg - Scotty
John Cho - SuLu
Zoe Saldana - Uhura
Anton Yelchin - Chekov
Star Trek XI starts filming next month and will be released on Christmas 2008.
