Three-time Emmy(R) Award winner Edie Falco is coming to a New York City hospital for SHOWTIME’s new half-hour single camera dark comedy series NURSE JACKIE (working title), it was jointly announced today by Robert Greenblatt, President of Entertainment for Showtime, and Kevin Beggs, President of Programming and Production for Lionsgate.

The twelve episode, half-hour series will star Falco as a strong-willed, iconoclastic New York City nurse juggling the frenzied grind of an urban hospital and an equally challenging personal life. The series will go into production in New York in late 2008, and will premiere in 2009.

“Nothing is more thrilling for us than bringing Edie Falco to Showtime in this unique, quirky, touching comedy/drama,” said Greenblatt. “If you suddenly found yourself in the hospital and fighting through our health care system, you would want no one other than Edie Falco — or Nurse Jackie — by your side. This show will illuminate the complex and often heroic people who devote their lives to healing the sick while simultaneously trying to make sense of
their own complicated personal lives. It’s quintessential premium cable, and with Edie on board, quintessential Showtime.”

“We’re thrilled about the pick-up of ‘NURSE JACKIE‘ and the expansion of our relationship with Showtime on what we expect will be another groundbreaking series,” said Beggs. “This subversive, yet wildly entertaining examination of our broken health care system, brought to life by the incomparable Edie Falco and an amazing creative team, promises to excite and
provoke audiences.”

The series is a co-production of Showtime and Lionsgate. The pilot was written by Liz Brixius, Linda Wallem (The Comeback, That ’70’s Show), and Evan Dunsky. Wallem and Brixius are executive producers and show runners. Caryn Mandabach will serve as an executive producer. Richie Jackson will serve as co-executive producer.

NURSE JACKIE is a half-hour dark comedy that is at turns wicked, heartbreaking and funny. Edie Falco stars as the title character Jackie O’Hurley, a strong-willed and brilliant — but very flawed — emergency room nurse in a complicated New York City hospital. A lapsed Catholic with an occasional weakness for Vicodin and Adderall to get her through the days, Jackie keeps the hospital balanced with her own kind of justice. Every day is a high wire act of juggling patients, doctors, fellow nurses and her own indiscretions. The series also stars Eve Best, Peter Facinelli, Merritt Wever, Haaz Slieman and Paul Schulze.

For her role as Carmela Soprano, Edie Falco was nominated six times for a Lead Actress in a Drama Series Primetime Emmy(R) Award — and won three times. She has also collected two Golden Globes(R) (seven nominations) and three SAG Awards (seven nominations).

The show is co-produced by Lionsgate and Showtime in association with Caryn Mandabach Productions and Madison Grain Elevator Inc.

The Dark Knight is off to a great start. The Batman sequel premiered yesterday and immediately broke its first record, the one for a 12:01 a.m. film opening. The movie earned $18,489,000 at the box office from midnight showings alone, as Warner Bros’ Domestic Distribution president Dan Fellman reports.

Better yet, it is currently rated as 94% fresh at the Tomatometer, still 1 percent ahead of this year’s other critics’ favourite superhero movie, Iron Man.

The midnight screenings record was previously held by Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, the conclusion to the franchise that first premiered on the big screens more than 30 years ago.

The Dark Knight simultaneously topped Warner Bros‘ studio record for 12:01 showings, previously held by Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Fellman says: “We have been thrilled by the response to The Dark Knight, first from the critics and now from audiences. From our earliest screenings, the buzz on the film has been white hot and it hasn’t let up. Now that the opening weekend is here, we are very excited to finally share The Dark Knight with moviegoers nationwide.”

Make that worldwide. The Dark Knight opens in countries across six continents this week.

Directed by Christopher Nolan, The Dark Knight stars Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhart.

Nolan directed the film from a screenplay written by Jonathan Nolan and Christopher Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer. Charles Roven, Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan are the producers, with Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Kevin De La Noy and Thomas Tull serving as executive producers.

The Batman Begins sequel is distributed worldwide in theatres and IMAX by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film has been rated PG-13 for “intense sequences of violence and some menace.”

They’ve long wanted to believe…and now the truth – and a new The X-Files movie – is finally out there for the legions of fans eagerly awaiting the debut of the next feature film based on the legendary television series. To honor these “X-Philes” (as the enthusiasts are known), Twentieth Century Fox is hosting a Fan Celebration at the world premiere screening of THE X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE on July 23 at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.

The studio is inviting X-Philes to gather that day in specially-built seating in front of the Hollywood landmark where they can observe the red-carpet arrivals – and participate in a special conference with the film’s stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, plus writer-producer-director Chris Carter and writer-producer Frank Spotnitz.

Situated on a stage in front of the theater, the four filmmakers will field questions from the fans, prior to fulfilling their more traditional duties with the press. (Seating will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Special credentials will be distributed at 4:00 p.m. to the first 500 fans that arrive that day. The festivities will begin at 6:00 p.m.).

X-Philes around the globe will experience the gala event live, via a special internet site from which they can direct questions in real-time to the film’s cast and filmmakers. This worldwide community of fans will also meet over 100 of the series’ co-stars, guest stars, and behind-the-scenes personnel who have already committed to attending the Celebration.

THE X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE opens everywhere July 25. In grand The X-Files tradition, its storyline is being kept under wraps, known only to top studio brass and the project’s principal actors and filmmakers.

This much can be revealed: The supernatural thriller is a stand-alone story in the tradition of some of the show’s most acclaimed and beloved episodes, and takes the always-complicated relationship between Fox Mulder (Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Anderson) in unexpected directions. Mulder continues his unshakable quest for the truth, and Scully, the passionate, ferociously intelligent physician, remains inextricably tied to Mulder’s pursuits.
