Qatar Museums Authority (QMA), the organization dedicated to developing the cultural resources of this Arabian Gulf state as a platform for international dialogue and understanding, has announced a groundbreaking agreement with New York’s world-renowned Tribeca Film Festival (TFF), to launch a world-class international film festival, Tribeca Film Festival Doha.
The first festival will take place November 10 - 14, 2009 and be presented at Doha’s celebrated new Museum of Islamic Art and in cinemas across Doha.
The announcement of the cultural partnership was made at a special ceremony at the new Museum of Islamic Art, which was attended by Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Chairperson of the Qatar Museums Authority Board of Trustees, and Abdullah Al Najjar, Chief Executive Officer of the Qatar Museums Authority. Joining on behalf of the Tribeca Film Festival were the co-founders, Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff.
H.E. Sheikha Mayassa expressed her confidence that the Tribeca Film Festival Doha will bring together people from around the globe and help to build international awareness and understanding of Arab culture and the Arab world.
“I invite film enthusiasts from every country to share their passion for this art by visiting the Tribeca Film Festival Doha,” Her Excellency stated.
“In today’s increasingly globalized world, creative initiatives like this Festival can play a truly inspirational role by bringing cultures closer together.”
Tribeca Film Festival Doha will be modeled after the annual Tribeca Film Festival in New York City, which is going into its eighth year. Like the New York event, it will welcome the community, diverse audiences and the global filmmaking industry. As a result of an extensive collaboration between TFF and QMA, the Festival has been designed to showcase the local Qatari community, as well as the broader Arab culture.
Tribeca Film Festival Doha will feature new work from established filmmakers, alongside film debuts from newly discovered directing talents.
The program will include approximately 40 films, as well as special events. The Festival will launch “The Doha Conversations”, thought-provoking and insightful dialogues between icons of world culture set in intimate environments, with the goal of fostering discussion in Qatar and around the globe. Full details of the festival program and guests will be announced at a later date.
“The Tribeca Film Festival Doha is destined to become a major annual event in world cinema,” stated Abdullah Al Najjar. “The Festival will include a wide range of programming, from outdoor screenings to movies for children, from documentaries to new Hollywood releases and from independent films to showcases of the very best works by Arab filmmakers.”
“We are honored to create an enduring cultural partnership with QMA and to announce the launch of the Tribeca Film Festival Doha next November. Qatar’s transformational vision for the 21st century with its emphasis on culture and education is uniquely consistent with the goals and aspirations of the Tribeca Film Festival,” said TFF co-founder, Jane Rosenthal.
“We hope that film will not only be used as a form of entertainment at Tribeca Film Festival Doha but play a role in bridging cultures closer together. By learning each other’s stories, we can see how much we share in common as well as explore and better understand our differences,” said Robert De Niro.
“In addition to the positive cultural implications, this initiative underscores the enormous potential of the entertainment market in the Middle East and the strategic importance of the region to the future of the film industry,” said TFF co-founder Craig Hatkoff. “We think the key to success will be understanding and respecting one another’s cultures and traditions. We believe this Festival will lead to many other important and educational initiatives in Doha and beyond.”
“The Tribeca Film Festival has become a world-renowned event, and its new partnership with the Qatar Museums Authority will leverage that success and help further its mission of introducing films and filmmakers to a global audience,” said New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. “The Festival’s substantial cultural and economic impact in New York City is unequivocal, and our hope is that Doha will reap similar benefits. The expansion of a New York institution like the Tribeca Film Festival to Doha is a sign of the international significance of New York City cinema and will help foster new relationships between our two cities.”
Tribeca Film Festival was founded in 2001 by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff in response to the events of September 11. The festival’s initial purpose was to spur the economic and cultural revitalization of Lower Manhattan through an annual celebration of film, music and culture.
Up to date festival information can be found by visiting the official Tribeca Film Festival Doha website.

New Moon, the sequel to Summit Entertainment’s vampire romance Twilight, has been given the green light by the studio. Twilight arrived in theatres this weekend to sold-out showings.
The second installment of the Twilight franchise will be based on Stephenie Meyer’s second book in the series, titled New Moon.
Stephenie Meyer stated, “I don’t think any other author has had a more positive experience with the makers of her movie adaptation than I have had with Summit Entertainment. I’m thrilled to have the chance to work with them again on New Moon.”
Starring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, Twilight tells the story of 17-year-old Bella Swan who moves to the small town of Forks, Washington to live with her father, and becomes drawn to Edward Cullen, a pale, mysterious classmate who seems determined to push her away. But neither can deny the attraction that pulls them together … even when Edward confides that he and his family are vampires. Their unorthodox romance puts her in physical danger when Edward’s nemesis comes to town and sets his sights on Bella.

ABC will not be ordering any new episodes of its sophomore shows Pushing Daisies, Dirty Sexy Money and Eli Stone, the network confirmed earlier today.
The unlucky trio chalked season lows among adults 18-49 (1.8 rating each) this week, which finally sealed their fate after several weeks of speculation and uncertainty. The cancellation will leave all three shows’ current seasons capped at 13 episodes.
Eli Stone, the series that received an order for four additional scripts only last month, has eight episodes left to air, while Pushing Daisies and Dirty Sexy Money have seven each. All three shows are expected to finish their runs in January.
The show that will very likely survive beyond January is ABC’s new cop drama Life on Mars. The network has ordered four more episodes of the show and given Mars a friendly Wednesday slot after Lost starting January 28.
Life on Mars has averaged a 2.9 rating among adults 18-49 in its past two airings, its best numbers since its October 9 premiere (3.8 rating).

Further demonstrating its commitment to quality 3-D motion picture entertainment, The Walt Disney Studios has begun re-rendering its Oscar(R)-winning animated favorite, Beauty and the Beast, in preparation for its Disney Digital 3-D(TM) debut on the big screen in 2010, it was announced today by Mark Zoradi, president, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Group. The announcement was made today in Singapore at 3DX: 3D Film and Entertainment Technology Festival, the industry’s first conference devoted to the latest advances in 3-D technology and exhibition. The addition of Beauty and the Beast to its schedule brings the total number of Disney Digital 3-D releases to 11 for 2009-10.
Next year’s 3-D schedule includes Jonas Brothers 3-D Concert Movie (2/27/09), Disney-Pixar’s UP, (5/29/09), G-Force from Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer Films (7/24/09), the newly re-rendered Disney Digital 3-D debut of Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story (10/2/09), and Disney’s A Christmas Carol, from director Robert Zemeckis (11/6/09) and starring Jim Carrey in multiple roles. In addition to Beauty and the Beast, Disney’s 3-D offerings for 2010 include Disney-Pixar’s newly re-rendered 3-D version of Toy Story 2, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland starring Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter, the debut of the all-new Toy Story 3 from Disney-Pixar, Disney’s enchanting new animated fairy tale, Rapunzel, and from Touchstone Pictures the dance phenomenon Step Up 3 (2010).
Creating a Disney Digital 3-D version of Beauty and the Beast, which won two Oscars(R) and is the only animated feature to ever receive a Best Picture nomination from the Motion Picture Academy, will be handled entirely in-house at Walt Disney Animation Studios, and will utilize innovative proprietary software, along with the latest techniques and advances in 3-D technology. Overseeing the project from the creative end will be the film’s original team of acclaimed filmmakers — producer Don Hahn, and directors Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale. A team of technical experts at Walt Disney Feature Animation will be headed by Sara Duran-Singer, senior vice president of Worldwide Post Production. The re-rendering is expected to take about nine months to complete, and will require a painstaking frame-by-frame analysis of the film’s original computer files in order to create new images for each eye.
Commenting on the announcement, Zoradi said, “Disney is proud to be a pioneer in creating spectacular 3-D motion picture experiences, and we have a great lineup of animated and live-action features to satisfy moviegoers of all ages. The re-rendering of our animated classic Beauty and the Beast into Disney Digital 3-D is another exciting step for this medium, and further proof of our commitment to the art and technology of 3-D filmmaking. With our animated feature Bolt set to hit 3-D theaters later this month, and eleven more 3-D features on the schedule over the next two years, our Studio is taking the lead position in bringing quality 3-D entertainment to moviegoers all over the world. Disney has created some fantastic new proprietary software to make the 3-D imagery better than ever, and we think audiences are going to love experiencing these films in a whole new dimension.”
Don Hahn, producer of the original Beauty and the Beast feature as well as the upcoming Disney Digital 3-D version, adds, “It’s a real thrill to be reunited with the film’s original directors, Kirk and Gary, in bringing new magic to this beloved animated classic. By going back to the original animation files, which have been carefully archived for 17 years, and using the separate background, effects and character animation elements, we’re able to come up with a fun and unique 3-D experience for existing and new fans of the film. With its exciting story, dazzling musical numbers, and landmark computer animated ballroom sequence, Beauty and the Beast lends itself particularly well to the 3-D process, and moviegoers will feel more connected than ever with the fairy tale world of Belle, Beast and the castle’s enchanted objects. It’s wonderful to revisit some of our favorite animated friends, and to bring them to life in a whole new way.”
Originally released in 1991, Beauty and the Beast proved to be a major success at the box office (the first animated feature to cross the $100 million plateau in its initial release), a favorite with moviegoers all over the world and an important milestone for the art of animation. In addition to its unprecedented Oscar(R) nomination for Best Picture, it received five other nominations from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (and won trophies for Best Song and Best Original Score). The film also won a Golden Globe Award for Best Comedy/Musical and garnered two Grammy Awards. A Broadway stage musical, based on the film, played from 1994 through 2007, and became the sixth-longest running production in Broadway history with 5,464 performances.

Disney’s A Christmas Carol, the spectacular 3D 2009 holiday release from director Robert Zemeckis and starring Jim Carrey, will be the first film from The Walt Disney Studios slated for IMAX(R) theatres under a new five-picture arrangement the studio reached with IMAX Corporation, it was announced today by Mark Zoradi, president, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Group.
Disney’s A Christmas Carol will lead off an impressive slate of upcoming films from the Studio and a roster of top filmmakers that may include director Tim Burton as well as producer Jerry Bruckheimer. This arrangement makes some of the Studio’s most highly anticipated theatrical releases from November 2009 and beyond available to IMAX venues across the country and around the world.
Commenting on the announcement, Zoradi said, “Experiencing great motion pictures in IMAX takes moviegoing to a whole new level of excitement, and we’re thrilled to be working with the pioneers at IMAX in this venture. We can’t think of a better way to launch than with Robert Zemeckis‘ fantastic new approach to the Dickens’ classic, A Christmas Carol. Following that, we have an incredible slate of new Disney Digital 3D(TM) motion pictures from some of the industry’s most accomplished and innovative filmmakers, and we know audiences are going to love being immersed in these great fantasies and adventures in IMAX’s format.”
“Entering into a five-picture agreement with Walt Disney Studios helps us ensure that our network has an outstanding slate of movies going forward,” said IMAX Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs Richard L. Gelfond and Bradley J. Wechsler. “We’re delighted to enter this new partnership with one of the greatest brands in the industry, especially at a time when we’re expanding to reach even more IMAX moviegoers.”
Chuck Viane, president of distribution, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures added, “IMAX has a great track record and a loyal following when it comes to presenting epic entertainment, and we believe we have a unique and exciting slate of films that lend themselves to the IMAX format. With the introduction of IMAX’s digital projection system, and the addition of new venues across the country, this is a great time to be working with IMAX to bring the ultimate moviegoing experience to audiences everywhere.”
“Disney’s commitment to 3D is great for IMAX moviegoers and dovetails ideally with our strategy to build a slate of top-quality movies from the best filmmakers and studios,” said Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. “We look forward to releasing A Christmas Carol as the first of many great Disney titles and working with them to provide IMAX theatres with more outstanding 3D content in the years ahead.”
Robert Zemeckis‘ takes the art of performance capture to the next level with the November 6, 2009 release of Disney’s A Christmas Carol. This multi-sensory 3D motion picture captures the fantastical essence of the classic Dickens tale in a groundbreaking motion picture event. Ebeneezer Scrooge (Jim Carrey) begins the Christmas holiday with his usual miserly contempt, barking at his faithful clerk (Gary Oldman), and his cheery nephew (Colin Firth). But when the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come (all played by Carrey) take him on an eye-opening journey revealing truths Old Scrooge is reluctant to face, he must open his heart to undo years of ill will before it’s too late.
Release dates for additional titles will be announced in the near future.
