European Film Awards 2009 – the winners

The 2009 European Film Awards were presented last night in Bochum, Germany. German director Michael Haneke won top honours (best film, best director, best screenplay) with The White Ribbon, a drama set in a German village in the months leading up to World War I. Haneke previously won the Golden Palm at Cannes and the FIPRESCI prize at the San Sebastian festival with the film. Gomorrah wins top five prizes at European Film Awards

Italian director Matteo Garrone’s Gomorrah, a tale of the Naples underworld based on the book by Roberto Saviano, won five of the 15 top awards, including Best Film, at the 21st European Film Awards. The awards ceremony was held in Copenhagen, Denmark on Saturday, December 6. European Film Awards nominations announced

The nominations for the 21st European Film Awards were announced at the Seville European Film Festival. With five nominations each, Paolo Sorrentino's Il Divo and Matteo Garrone's Gomorrah are leading the pack this year. The 1,800 European Film Academy (EFA) members will now cast their votes and the winners of the 2008 EFA Awards will be announced at the Awards Ceremony in Copenhagen on December 6. European Film Academy announces selections for 2008 European Film Awards

The European Film Academy (EFA) has released the list of the potential nominees for this year's European Film Awards. The list includes 44 films from 27 countries, with France,  the U.K., and Germany leading the pack with multiple nominations. The official list of nominated films will be announced on November 8 at the Sevilla European Film Festival, after EFA's 1,800 members have had a chance to vote for the nominees in a number of categories.
